POEM: Better Not Break A Leg

He played football on a package holiday

Dads versus lads. But he broke his leg.

He went home plastered from thigh to toe.

He couldn’t bring himself to tell anyone.

Couldn’t deal with the awkward silence

from his mates. He felt like such a fool.

So he decided to tell them he’d had

a breakdown, that he cuts himself

to take away the violence in his head,

that the depression is sometimes

so profound he can hardly face the day.

Yes, that’s what he’d say, to avoid

the shame of a leg broken by his son.
